Our Consultation strongly endorses the Aleppo Statement. The Aleppo Statement rightly calls attention to the centrality of Christ’s resurrection as the basis of our common faith. As “the ultimate expression of the Father’s gift of reconciliation and unity in Christ through the Spirit,” the resurrection “is a sign of the unity and reconciliation which God wills for the entire creation” paragraph 5. Yet by celebrating the feast of Christ’s resurrection, the Holy Pascha, or Easter, on different Sundays in the same year, “the churches give a divided witness” to this mystery, “compromising their credibility and effectiveness in bringing the Gospel to the world” paragraph 1. It is a matter of concern in our own North American context. It has become an even more urgent issue in some parts of the world such as the Middle East, where Christians constitute a divided minority in a larger non-Christian society.

It is absolutely the main verse that states a provision on marriage with a category of non-Muslims. These invite to the Fire, and Allah invites to the Garden and to forgiveness by His grace, and makes clear His revelations to mankind so that they may remember. It is also worth reminding that polytheists were belonging to an aristocratic class of obscene wealth and indecent conduct, and whose lifestyle was reconsidered by the new social values of fairness and equity of Islam. The verse seems to urge Muslim men and women to choose the modest believing slaves over the rich arrogant polytheists even if the latter would look more attractive than the poor slaves.
By getting married to slaves regardless of their social hardship, Islam encouraged Muslims to value people on other basis than their social class, and henceforth; find a balance between the differences established by the ethnic-tribal system at that time. The purpose was to absolutely avoid the marriage of Muslims to polytheists who made every effort to stand against a religion that was defending the most vulnerable people on earth.
“Common Response to the Aleppo Statement on the Date of Easter/Pascha” (October 31, ) from the North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation.
In it, the anonymous author describes the severe ostracism she and her husband faced from their families and communities because of their marriage. The piece was written at a time when there were relatively few intermarriages in the United States, and it was still common for Jewish parents to sever all ties with and literally sit shiva for a child who married a non-Jew. Since the second half of the 20th century—mainly as a result of greater secularization, assimilation and increased social mobility—American Jewish society has undergone a series of radical transformations.
Simultaneously, there has been a steep increase in intermarriage rates, particularly since the s. This number is higher in the Reform and Reconstructionist movements and somewhat lower in the Conservative movement. Intermarriage rarely if ever occurs in the Orthodox community, and when it does happen, people leave for other denominations. The very meaning of intermarriage has shifted with these demographic changes. In earlier periods, intermarriage was generally seen as a rejection of Jewish identity and a form of rebellion against the community.

October 28, at 5: She told him he needs to be good and find a good Muslim wife and have kids. She told him this life is a test and we should only worry about after. The Internet revolution greatly helped launch another new international interreligious organization, the United Religions Initiative, even though it was widely considered to be superfluous by major established interreligious organizations when it started as a result of the 50th anniversary of the UN in San Francisco in
And you know what, in some ways, I agree. I suspect that if you are reading this, then perhaps you are in a similar predicament. Can an interfaith marriage really work? How religious is each person? If one person is very religious and the other person is a bit indifferent, the household could tend to lean towards the religion of the person that is more religious. Maybe this is considered a benefit as it would minimize conflict. On the other hand if one person is just not into religion as a whole then that person might prefer that no religion be emphasized in the house.
This could be problematic for the person who is more religious. Discuss your religious deal breakers. Before we got married my husband and I had a heart to heart to discuss our deal breakers, things we would absolutely not be willing to compromise. My husband is Christian and I am Muslim. I told my husband that he nor any member of his family should baptize our children against my will. It is critical that these type of religious deal breakers be discussed prior to marriage.
Every couple should get premarital counseling, especially if they are attempting to enter into an interfaith marriage.

If this is the case, racism might be involved! Still, most research suggests that acceptance towards interracial dating and marriage is increasing in most circles, such as in this Eagle-Tribune article. If the two religious groups are prominent in- and out-groups, such as the way Protestant and Catholic Irish see each other, then an interfaith marriage might be as much intergroup as intercultural, especially if actual doctrine is not really that important to either partner.
Brief Summary of Some of the Literature Many years ago in a conference paper, I used a systems metaphor for intercultural marriage with application to other forms of dating and romance, as well as friendship that suggested that in intimate relationship, partners bring certain aspects with them input. Within the relationship, the partners lovers, friends, etc.

Tom Chulak, Unitarian-Universalist minister. There are no rules Inter-faith marriages are those between persons from different religious traditions. Intra-faith marriages are between two persons from different denominations within the same religion. Each one is special. Some couples follow very different religions e. Others are members of similar faith groups within one religion e. Southern Baptists and Assembly of God. Some spouses have very little involvement with their faith; to others, religion forms the core of their life.
Some spouses see merit in faiths other than their own; at the other extreme, they may view other faiths as forms of Satanism. The degree of differences and amount of conflict vary widely from family to family. For simplicity, we will assume in this essay an intra-faith marriage between two Christians of different denominations.

Considerable variations exist from country to country and even within one country, namely the United States. Regensburg Lecture In an address to the faculty at the University of Regensburg , Germany, Benedict discussed the preconditions for an effective dialogue with Islam and other cultures. This requires a review of theology and science. Hence the human sciences , such as history , psychology , sociology and philosophy , attempt to conform themselves to this canon of science”. For philosophy and, albeit in a different way, for theology, listening to the great experiences and insights of the religious traditions of humanity , and those of the Christian faith in particular, is a source of knowledge , and to ignore it would be an unacceptable restriction of our listening and responding.
Only thus do we become capable of that genuine dialogue of cultures and religions so urgently needed today. In the Western world it is widely held that only positivistic reason and the forms of philosophy based on it are universally valid. Yet the world’s profoundly religious cultures see this exclusion of the divine from the universality of reason as an attack on their most profound convictions.
A reason which is deaf to the divine and which relegates religion into the realm of subcultures is incapable of entering into the dialogue of cultures. Theology of Joseph Ratzinger[ edit ] Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith[ edit ] Ratzinger became known as a theologian through his position at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , which he headed until his election to the Papacy.
It has been frequently overlooked that he opened up his congregation to theological and historical research , by providing greater access to the Archive of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In absence of a large body of papal teachings of Benedict XVI, the Ratzinger theology is often cited.

Terminology[ edit ] In Islamic law, marriage is called nikah, an Arabic word whose original literal meaning is “sexual intercourse”, but which already in the Quran is used exclusively to refer to the contract of marriage. The most common and recognized types of marriage at this time consisted of: They were never bound by contract for marriage or custody of children and their consent was never sought.
Women were seldom allowed to divorce their husbands and their view was not regarded for either a marriage or divorce. Islamic marital jurisprudence Muhammad had reformed the laws and procedures of the common marriage practices that existed during his prophethood.
In other words, what is the shape of interfaith and interreligious studies, and what is its distinct contribution? These questions are the driving force behind this anthology. “This is a powerful and essential tool for incorporating interfaith studies into a variety of settings.”.
What contribution to politics, science and culture in general can we propose to draft a decalogue of human coexistence? So far, there have been four interfaith prayer meetings for world peace in Assisi. Here is some video footage of the event that started it all: Far from obtaining world peace, this incredibly evil, syncretist, indifferentist, and naturalist abomination will only further provoke the wrath of Almighty God; and , because it equates the only true God and His only true Religion with false deities and all sorts of heretical sects.
Or what fellowship hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath the faithful with the unbeliever? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? In , Pope Pius XI condemned precisely such kinds of gatherings and prohibited Catholics from having anything to do with them: For which reason conventions, meetings and addresses are frequently arranged by these persons, at which a large number of listeners are present, and at which all without distinction are invited to join in the discussion, both infidels of every kind, and Christians, even those who have unhappily fallen away from Christ or who with obstinacy and pertinacity deny His divine nature and mission.
Certainly such attempts can nowise be approved by Catholics, founded as they are on that false opinion which considers all religions to be more or less good and praiseworthy, since they all in different ways manifest and signify that sense which is inborn in us all, and by which we are led to God and to the obedient acknowledgment of His rule.
Not only are those who hold this opinion in error and deceived, but also in distorting the idea of true religion they reject it, and little by little, turn aside to naturalism and atheism, as it is called; from which it clearly follows that one who supports those who hold these theories and attempt to realize them, is altogether abandoning the divinely revealed religion.
